Dalia Hussein Ali Abdullah, from Yemen, recently participated in the prestigious "Art of Wheels – Rim Design Challenge 2022" and successfully secured a place in the Top 7. This article delves into her experience, inspiration, and aspirations for the future.
A Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Industrial Design student, Dalia enjoys her course and appreciates the support she receives from her lecturers. Limkokwing University’s emphasis on participation in competitions and workshops has helped prepare her for the industry’s challenges.
During the Rim Design Challenge, Dalia faced the daunting task of creating a unique design that could stand out among the myriad options on the market. She overcame this challenge by embracing all her ideas and allowing them to evolve, eventually arriving at her final design. Drawing inspiration from the shuriken or ninja star, Dalia’s rim design embodies the same characteristics of the famed Japanese martial arts weapon. She reflected that “this idea of the shuriken came across my mind; the more I searched about it, the more convinced I was. Because the shuriken has a unique design, it is fast, lightweight, and moves smoothly when thrown. And these exactly are the characteristics I wanted to have in my rim design.”
Dalia believes that the uniqueness of her design sets it apart from others. She aimed for a less aggressive look, focusing on matching the flow of lines on a car while ensuring the design was modern, functional, and distinctive.
As she continues to explore the various aspects of industrial design, Dalia is open to new experiences and opportunities, like the rim design competition, which has broadened her interests. The competition has provided her valuable experience, making her eager for more challenges. Dalia advises other aspiring designers: “Seize every opportunity, be confident in your ideas, and remember that experience is the key to improvement.”
By integrating practical experience and exposure to various industry events, Limkokwing University has cultivated a comprehensive learning environment that equips its students with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in their chosen fields. As a result, graduates like Dalia are better prepared to navigate the complexities of the design world and contribute meaningfully to their profession, armed with a strong foundation in theoretical understanding and practical application.
With her passion for design and willingness to embrace new experiences, Dalia Abdullah undoubtedly has a great future in industrial design. We look forward to witnessing her continued growth and success in the field.
